Season Overview:
Adam Cooney proved that he could still be a highly valuable member of the Bulldogs line-up, despite the management of his knee injury. Adding some composure and class to the team’s developing midfield stocks, the 26 year old was also influential when pushed up into the forward line, contributing to the goal tally on seven occasions.
By the Numbers:
Despite restricted game time he eventually ranked equal sixth in goals for the Bulldogs, in line with Liam Picken and Liam Jones. With 14 games for the year, Cooney managed one more game than last season where he played 13. He averaged 20.9 disposals per game, 3.1 clearances, 3.4 inside 50s, 0.6 goals and 0.5 goal assists.
Season Highlight:
Cooney’s return to football for the final three rounds saw him re-gain confidence in his body and provide some much needed run through the middle as well as providing another experienced head around the stoppages. The round 23 clash with Brisbane was arguably his best performance for the year with a season high 29 disposals at 72% disposal efficiency. He also saw five marks, seven tackles, five clearances and a goal for the day. Even more pleasing was his ability to create opportunities for his teammates with two inside 50s, three rebound 50s and one goal assist.
Pre-Season Focus:
The main focus of Cooney’s pre-season will be working in tandem with the Bulldogs medical staff in managing his knee injury and getting himself into the best shape possible for next year. Likely to continue on a modified training regime, the Brownlow Medallist will want to maximise his influence and game time next season as best he can and this Summer will play an influential role in that.
