The Western Bulldogs have successfully completed their first full-scale pre-season hitout for 2023, taking part in an intraclub match simulation at Mars Stadium on Saturday morning.
32 senior-listed Bulldogs featured across both teams in a tale of two halves – with scores reset at the main break and a number of players swapping guernseys.
A patch of rain midway through the third quarter also provided the chance to test the Dogs’ wet weather skills.
Consistent midfield culprits Marcus Bontempelli and Tom Liberatore found plenty of the ball, while welcoming Caleb Daniel to the fold at various points.
Daniel’s efforts inside were solid, with Tim English delivering first-class service in the ruck.
Recruit Liam Jones fit into the backline seamlessly – reading the ball well while using his AFL experience to impact effectively.
On the scoreboard, Buku Khamis produced a double in the opening quarter – finishing with three majors - while winger Anthony Scott pushed forward to end up with two of his own.
The Dogs’ starting forward-line was stacked with height, including the likes of Aaron Naughton (three goals), Rory Lobb, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (two goals) and Sam Darcy.
Forward-turned-defender Josh Bruce worked his way into his new role, while Ryan Gardner and Alex Keath stood tall down back.
Youngsters Arthur Jones and Luke Cleary impressed in their respective spots, while recruit Oskar Baker showcased his speed on the wing.
The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to next Saturday’s practice match against North Melbourne at IKON Park.
That match will be free admission, with the first bounce at 1.10pm.
