Western Bulldogs coach Nathan Burke has commended the versatility and determination of his team after qualifying for the NAB AFLW Season Seven finals series.

The Bulldogs recorded a dramatic come-from-behind win over Carlton on Friday night, partly thanks to some Ellie Blackburn brilliance, sealing their spot inside the top eight in the process.

Burke was full of praise for the three-time All Australian Blackburn, who registered 23 disposals, seven tackles and two goals in the three-point triumph.

“You can’t love a person or a footballer more than that,” he told media post-match.

“I’m not going to go into the details of what she’s been dealing with, but her particular condition isn’t helped by flying. We flew to Perth and back last week.

“I honestly didn’t think she was going to play today. From not being able to play today, not training throughout the whole week and then to come out and do that – it’s special.

“What she did was amazing. She delivered like she always does.”

Burke was also pleased with his side’s willingness to never-say-die and roll with the punches of positional changes.

“We always said as a coaching group, that our team at the start of the year won’t be the team at the end of the year,” he said.

“Part of that is to keep the team fresh a little bit – we always knew Lizzy (Georgostathis) could go back. We always knew Elle Bennetts could go back. We wanted to change up the look of the midfield, so De Berry and Browny (Eleanor Brown) came into the middle, and Sarah Hartwig has gone forward.

“That’s five changes, or just over 25% of the team. The fact is all of those players have really grasped those opportunities.

“(This team) is a really versatile lot – no matter what I throw at them, they take to it and have a crack.

“We’re still on track (for 2x25) which is good. You’ve got to be in it to win it, and we’re in it so we’ll see what happens.”

The Bulldogs will now wait to see who they’ll meet in an elimination final next week.
