Round 2, 2021
Two fourth-quarter goals from skipper Ellie Blackburn saw the Western Bulldogs knock off Carlton by six points at VU Whitten Oval in 2021. A host of Blues had opportunities in front of goal late but couldn’t convert, with the Dogs holding strong to register a six-point win in the Pride Game. Blackburn finished with 22 disposals, five marks and 412 metres gained in a best-on-ground performance, while Jess Fitzgerald claimed a Rising Star nomination for 15 touches, four marks, 433 metres gained and a goal in just her second game at AFLW level.
TALKING POINTS
IKON a familiar stomping ground
Friday night might be the Bulldogs’ third game of the season at IKON Park, but remarkably it will be their first outing there as the away team. With redevelopment works well underway at VU Whitten Oval, the Bulldogs needed to source a number of ‘home’ grounds for season seven. As a result, two of their five home matches were played at IKON Park – for two wins too. It’s a better win-loss record than their counterparts Carlton, with a draw being their closest result to a win at Princes Park this season.
Twiggy clicks inside 50
The decision to send defender Sarah Hartwig forward is finally reaping rewards, with the former Sandringham Dragon enjoying a breakout game in attack against the Eagles. Finishing with two goals from 10 disposals, four contested marks and four tackles, Hartwig’s impact saw her named the Bulldogs’ round nine MVP for best on ground, and selected on the interchange bench in AFL Media’s Team of the Week. At just 20 years old, the young gun still has plenty of footy ahead of her too – and we can’t wait to see it.
Moody²
For just the third time in AFLW history, twin sisters Celine and Breann Moody will go head-to-head on opposing teams. Bulldog Celine was able to square the ledger in 2021, earning bragging rights over Blue Breann, but the overall ledger sits at one apiece. In the past, the 25-year-olds have usually lined up against each other in the ruck, but Celine’s move forward this season means they might not have as much of an opportunity to banter on-field. Regardless, it will be yet another proud moment for the Moody family, and another opportunity for one of the two – we hope Celine - to claim the self-titled ‘Moody Cup’.
