It may seem like the trade action has been condensed to a couple of days, but in reality it’s been a busy few weeks and months for Bulldogs List Manager Jason McCartney and his recruiting team.
Undoubtedly the acquisition of teenage power-forward Tom Boyd from the GWS Giants has been the highlight of all Bulldogs trade discussions.
It was a bold bid by McCartney and the Club to lure Boyd - the 2013 No. 1 draft pick - to the Kennel, but it was one rewarded on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s been a focus area of need for a fair while at this football club, and to be able for our club to attract someone of that quality [of Boyd], a player of that’s so young and will have such a long future at our footy club…it was a really important acquisition,” McCartney said.
While the upside of the hulking 200 centimetre, 104 kilogram Boyd is uncapped, patience will be required as young forward finds his feet at senior level.
“What we do need to understand is that he’s only 19 years of age, and that’s the big thing,” McCartney added.
However, the Bulldogs List Manager was quick to add Boyd’s presence will quickly benefit his teammates.
“The first two players that shot me a note when we acquired Tom, was Jake Stringer and Stewart Crameri, so it’s the players around him that will get the benefit as well.”
Also making the Kennel his home at the end of the trade period was Sydney Swans running defender Shane Biggs.
At 187 centimetres tall, and with pace to burn, Biggs adds a new dimension to the growing crop of young midfielders at the Club.

Playing finals football for the Swans in 2013, Biggs impressed in the NEAFL for much of 2014 after Glandular fever interrupted his pre-season.
The running half-back broke into the AFL ranks late in the season, gathering 24-possesions against St Kilda, while impressing in a run-with role on Ryan Griffen in the Swans defeat of the Bulldogs.
“He’s a really good runner, uses the ball well, good decision maker so that half back area, outside midfielder is an area we can bolster with Shane,” McCartney said.
While Shaun Higgins departed the club for North Melbourne through free agency, Liam Jones and Adam Cooney also found new homes at the end of the NAB AFL Trade Period.
Jones became a Blue making VISY Park his new home in return for pick No. 46, and Cooney became a Bomber in return for pick No. 37.
“I think when we sat down with Adam at the end of the year…he was quite open minded about what he’d seen with Brian Lake – obviously his best mate – at that later stage in his career and seeking opportunities elsewhere,” said McCartney.
“He’s such a decorated player at this football club, and no more decorated individual award than a Brownlow Medal.”
“We wish Adam all the best for his future at the Essendon Football Club now.”
The Bulldogs now head to next month’s NAB AFL Draft with five draft picks inside the top-50, with the finishing touches now being put on the preparations by Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple and his team.
“They’re quite tightly together those picks so we’ve identified some players, and the [recruiting] boys are working through it again, where we’ll be doing follow up investigation, more analysis…really honing in [on players we want to draft],” said McCartney.
One player guaranteed to arrive at Victoria University Whitten Oval through November’s draft will be athletic, tall defender Zaine Cordy, who’s future was confirmed through the father-son bidding process.
“It may have been a little bit lost through all this, but we are just overwhelming excited about the opportunity we’ve got Zaine Cordy,” McCartney said.
Cordy was rated a top-30 prospect before bidding and slipped through to the fourth round, with the earliest bidder Fremantle placing a bid at pick 51.
Super competitive, and versatile in his capacity to play on a range of opponents, Cordy is the fifth father-son to be added to the Bulldogs senior list.
Cordy will be taken with the Bulldogs fourth round selection, pick No. 64 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.
“[Securing Cordy with a fourth round pick] allowed us some flexibility and to do what we did through the trade period.”
The 2014 NAB AFL Draft will be held on the Gold Coast on Thursday, 27 November.
