AFLW SQUAD | Round 6
Nell Morris-Dalton will make her AFLW debut against Fremantle on Sunday.
The Western Bulldogs will debut another player from their 2019 draft class this weekend, with Nell Morris-Dalton named to face Fremantle.
The former Northern Knight premiership player was taken with the Bulldogs’ second selection in the draft last year, and has been named at full-forward in a 23-player squad for Sunday’s clash at VU Whitten Oval.
Morris-Dalton had a major impact in the 2019 NAB League Girls’ finals campaign, slotting seven goals from two matches to earn herself a spot in the 2019 Team of the Year.
Nicole Callinan and Britney Gutknecht have been added to an extended interchange, while Hannah Scott has been omitted.
The squad of 23 will be narrowed down to a team of 21 at 4pm on Friday.
Ellyse Gamble, who was a late withdrawal last week with a quad injury, will miss again.
The Bulldogs enter the meeting off the back of a 32-point loss to Collingwood away, while Fremantle is undefeated this season.
It will also be the Dogs’ first game back home at VU Whitten Oval since Round 3.
The match will be televised live on Fox Footy from 1pm, with the first bounce at 1.10pm this Sunday.
Make sure you’re following @BulldogsW on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for all the latest updates.
Please note the pre-game HIIT workout, Fan Zone and Gage Roads Garden Bar will not go ahead this weekend. We apologise for any inconveniences caused and thank you for your understanding.
Due to the West Footscray Festival, Barkly Street will be closed both directions between Market St and Russell St from 7am to 9pm on Sunday March 15th. The event runs from 11am to 4pm and is free. Plan your journey to the game at ptv.vic.gov.au.
AFLW ROUND 6
Western Bulldogs v Fremantle Sunday 15 March, 1.10pm AEDT VU Whitten Oval
AFLW Report: Dogs fall short after valiant performance
Western Bulldogs go down by 15 points to Fremantle on Sunday.
The Western Bulldogs have fallen narrowly short of an upset win against Fremantle, after a high-scoring contest at a VU Whitten Oval.
A four-goal to nil final term helped the Dockers continue their undefeated season against an inexperienced Bulldogs outfit.
The 10.6 (66) to 8.3 (51) result set the record as the highest aggregate score between two AFL Women's sides.
07:23
After leading for much of the day in a free-flowing game – including at quarter time and three-quarter time – the Bulldogs were overrun in the last quarter, despite a valiant effort.
But there were plenty of highlights for the Bulldogs, who had six teenagers from last year’s NAB AFLW Draft class on the field – including debutante Nell Morris-Dalton – and were without the likes of Lauren Spark, Brooke Lochland, Bonnie Toogood and Hannah Scott.
Skipper Ellie Blackburn led from the front with 18 disposals and two goals, while Izzy Huntington was equally impressive as an interceptor across half-back, collecting 15 disposals and six marks.
Aisling McCarthy also continued her consistent year, racking up nine tackles and 18 disposals, while Kirsten McLeod added two more goals to her season tally.
00:29
The Bulldogs’ young brigade also showed signs of promise.
Number one draft pick Gabby Newton collected 16 touches and laid eight tackles, while Elisabeth Georgostathis (13 disposals) looked likely and Morris-Dalton had a presence in the forward arc.
The Bulldogs will next face North Melbourne, next Saturday at 3.10pm at Arden St Oval.
BEST Western Bulldogs: Huntington, Blackburn, McCarthy, Georgiostathis, Newton, Brown Fremantle: Bowers, E. Antonio, Gooch, Miller, K. Antonio, Clifford
INJURIES Western Bulldogs: Nil Fremantle: Nil
LATE CHANGES Western Bulldogs: Brooke Lochland (managed) replaced by Brittney Gutknecht, Lauren Spark (unwell) replaced by Nicole Callinan Fremantle: Janelle Cuthbertson (soreness) replaced by Sarah Garstone
