WESTERN Bulldog Matthew Boyd says the Dogs will again back a largely inexperienced midfield this week when taking on one of the most talented engines in the league.

The Dogs were without Ryan Griffen, Daniel Cross, Shaun Higgins and Daniel Giansiracusa last weekend against the Brisbane Lions, but still managed to get on top of Michael Voss's experienced midfield.

Only Higgins will return to the side this week, with Griffen to miss two weeks, Cross another one and Giansiracusa to play in the VFL.

Boyd said he was confident Callan Ward, Liam Picken and Sam Reid, who have 44 senior games between them, could continue to fly the flag if needed against Geelong on Friday night.

"All my teammates have got confidence that whoever comes into the side will be able to do the job," he said on Tuesday.

"We had some younger guys start off in the centre bounce on Saturday night, and they did a great job and did the role the team asked them to play.

"Those young guys have really stood up, and I know Reidy hasn't played much this year but he came in and just looks part of it."

Boyd said he felt like he didn't have to take on any extra responsibility in the midfield, such was the impressive talent of the young players.

However, he said he was prepared to possibly face off with Gary Ablett again, after running with the hard-working Cat in the second half of the round nine clash between the two sides.

"It's always a great challenge and is exciting to get the good players and try to beat them," he said.

"They've got a great midfield so it doesn't matter who you play on. It's going to be a tough game.

"If the coaches give you the job on Ablett, they must rate how you go about it.

"He's in great form, he's the best player in the comp, so if I get the job, I get the job."

Boyd said round nine taught him just how hard he needed to play in order to stop an individual of Ablett's calibre.

"It's just his work rate to get the footy and the way he uses it. You try and learn from everyone you play on for next time you might get them," he said.

"He's just a great player and he's towelled a few players up this year.

"It's going to be a really exciting game and we need to win to keep our top four hopes going, so it's a big game and it's exciting to be a part of."
