1. Defensive duo’s big impact
Quick ball movement left the Bulldogs’ back line exposed at times on Sunday afternoon.
Two players who stood tall were Alex Keath and Taylor Duryea.
Duryea was particularly influential in the first half, thwarting a number of forward thrusts from the Swans.
Keath put the clamps on Swans star Lance Franklin, restricting him to just 10 disposals and one goal.
2. Clearance dominance doesn’t translate
The Bulldogs’ midfield was dominant around the ball – particularly in the first half.
They won the clearance count 42-26, including a 15-3 differential in centre clearances.
But they weren’t able to capitalise on that going forward.
The Swans were able to get control of the ball, use it effectively and hit the scoreboard.
Their kicking efficiency was 74 per cent – compared to the Dogs’ 60 per cent – and 62 of their 79 points were generated from turnover.
3. English stands tall
Ruck-forward Tim English was one of the Bulldogs’ most influential players in defeat.
The big man had an equal career-best 22 disposals and clunked eight marks, including some strong grabs inside 50 and in the Bulldog’s defensive end.
English missed a month of football earlier in the year due to concussion.
But he’s been an important for the Bulldogs since his return – particularly in the absence of injured ruck Stefan Martin.
He was impressive a fortnight ago against the West Coast Eagles.
