Western Bulldogs senior coach Luke Beveridge is expecting a fierce challenge from the Brisbane Lions when they meet at Mars Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Despite coming off the back of a record-breaking 128-point win over North Melbourne on Good Friday, Beveridge said the team prepared as they would any other week.
“We processed the week as we normally would – there was obviously a lot of good in the game for us (last week), but there was still the two or three areas that we could do a little bit better,” Beveridge told media on Friday morning.
“That’s what each week is about really – trying to improve and understanding that whoever you play, whether it’s North or Brisbane, you just have to be on edge for their best.
“That’s where we’ll aim to be going into this one – (with Brisbane) being away from home and being able to galvanise, and have the commendable and really inspirational victory that they had last week, I imagine they’re pretty buoyed by that and will go in with a head of steam.”
The Lions have won the past two contests between the two teams - most recently by 24 points in round 11 last season - where eventual Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale (36 disposal, 12 clearances) proved a headache for the Bulldogs.
Beveridge said despite the history, he hasn’t made a call yet on whether he’ll send someone to run with Neale.
“The last time we played Brisbane, Lachie was their best player, so as a group we weren’t able to quell his influence,” he said.
“It’s always a consideration – you think back to last year and we had some really effective negating roles performed by Toby McLean, and at times by one of our inside mids.
“We’ll deploy (a tag) if we feel like we need to – which is part of keeping you on the edge and having enough respect for the opposition.”
In terms of ensuring the group remains ready for each challenge, Beveridge said it’s a mix of both players and staff that contribute to keeping the team focused.
“I always rely on our great people who work for us – our coaches, who do a tremendous job at prodding and reminding individuals and lines about different things, and our staff who continually work really hard in our high performance and medical areas to make sure the players are fine-tuned in the lead-up,” the coach said.
“Obviously I come in near the end of the week and maybe tie it all up in a little bundle, but our desire is that our players are the ones who are driving each other.
“(They’re) reminding each other at just how important it is to make sure there’s no complacency, and that we continue to have that eye of the tiger.”
The undefeated Bulldogs will host the Lions at Mars Stadium in Ballarat on Saturday 10 April from 1.35pm.
While tickets for the match sold out on Wednesday, fans will be able to watch the game live on Fox Footy and Kayo Sports from 1.30pm AEST.
