Western Bulldogs forward Ben Cavarra says it’s been pleasing to have impacted the scoreboard for Footscray in recent weeks, as he pushes his case for AFL selection.
Cavarra managed four goals for the VFL Bulldogs in a scratch match against North Melbourne on Good Friday morning, after bagging another four the week prior against Essendon.
The 25-year-old credited assistant coach Travis Varcoe and his teammates on the day for his scoreboard impact.
“I’ve been doing a lot of work with Travis Varcoe during the week on my forward craft and goalkicking,” he told westernbulldogs.com.au following the ‘Scray’s 48-point win.
“My game is based around that forward pressure and putting some blocks on for the big boys so if it falls my way, it’s great.”
Cavarra was also impressed with the Bulldogs’ tackling pressure, considering the temperature neared 30°C as the game progressed at VU Whitten Oval.
“A lot of us were really excited to come in today knowing that the sun would be out and the skills should be up, so it was good,” he said.
“It’s something that we focus on most weeks anyway, but I thought the ferocity around the footy was really good - the boys inside did a magnificent job of laying their tackles and either holding and containing the footy, or winning it to get it forward for us.
“(It’s about) valuing those goal assists and score involvements just as much as the goals.”
Cavarra played three senior games last season after making his debut in the opening round.
