Star midfielder Jack Macrae knows the Western Bulldogs have a point to prove on Friday night.
This time last year, the Bulldogs were humbled by Collingwood in their season-opener, going down by 52 points in a disappointing performance before the competition was suspended for almost three months.
That night is still fresh in the mind of Macrae ahead of a round one re-match with the Magpies.
“Probably for most of the wrong reasons,” he told media at VU Whitten Oval today.
“It was one of the worst games I’ve been involved in, to be honest.
“We didn’t bring the intensity we wanted to and it was a bitterly disappointing night, culminated by the fact that after that game we didn’t play footy for a long time so we sat on that performance for a long time.”
It goes without saying that round one is always a big occasion.
But the addition of Adam Treloar at the Kennel – who if named, will come up against his former side – adds more spice to a Friday night blockbuster.
Macrae said while Treloar has already made an impact at the Bulldogs, the team wouldn’t need to use that for added motivation.
“If you’re struggling to get up for round one, you’re probably not in the best state of mind anyway as a club,” he said.
“Obviously there’s a bit more feeling there with Adam.
“We’re going to do our best to win for him, but also for our fans and ourselves as well. We’re just focused on starting the season really well.”
