Round 3 of the VFLW season proved to be challenging for the Western Bulldogs, who went down 3.0 (18) to 10.10 (70) against a dominant Collingwood outfit at VU Whitten Oval on Friday night.
The Bulldogs started the game strongly, with Molly Denahy Maloney scoring a major within the first minute.
Despite the early scoreboard pressure, Collingwood soon began to take control with repeat forward entries, however the Bulldogs capitalised on their opportunities to be within two points at quarter time.
AFLW player Bailey Hunt got plenty of the ball early, showcasing her aerobic capacity as she worked hard around the ground.
A second quarter goal to Issy Grant on the back of some quick ball movement was not enough to counteract Collingwood’s pressure, as they stretched the lead out to nine points at the main break.
Captain Riley Christgoergl and Amanda Tessari fought bravely in defence, however the game broke open in the third quarter with Collingwood managing to lock the ball in their forward half and keep the determined Bulldogs side goalless.
AFLW Bulldog Annabel Strahan enjoyed another strong individual performance off the half-back line, while fellow young gun Grant also showcased her talents.
Consistent performer Nicole McMahon worked hard in the ruck, however it was all Collingwood in the final quarter as they stormed home 52-point victors.
The Bulldogs will now look to get back on the winners list next Saturday, when they host Williamstown at VU Whitten Oval.
