Ronald Palmer, a life member of the Western Bulldogs who has made an significant contribution to Footscray through a life time of community service and volunteering has passed away at the age of 92.
Known to many as ‘Mr. Footscray’ for his contribution to his local community, Mr. Palmer is also a lifelong Bulldogs fan who was awarded a life membership to the Club in 1963.
Western Bulldogs CEO Gary Kent said the Club was saddened by Mr. Palmer’s passing.
“Anytime we lose a figure of Ron’s standing it leaves a significant hole, and he’ll be greatly missed by us all,” Kent said.
“Ron’s dedication to the people of Footscray was second to none and our community is a better place for Ron’s contribution.
“And while today we’re thinking of his family and friends and their loss, we should all be inspired by the way he lived his life.”
Mr. Palmer has been a member of the West Footscray Rotary Club for four decades and has helped to develop a healthy school breakfast program at Gilmore Girls College.
As President of the Footscray Yarraville City Band, Ronald’s involvement over the past 50 years has ensured the band received support from the local council to ensure its ongoing success.
Mr. Palmer also established the Footscray Festival, is Treasurer of Friends of Footscray Park, was a life member of the Footscray Community Arts Centre, President of the Footscray Historical Society and was awarded the 2007 Senior of the Year Award by then Premier John Brumby.
