AFL.com.au worked with Champion Data to find each club's best performers in some key metrics. The stats are rounded to the first decimal point, however, the players' ranking is determined by his actual standing in that metric (i.e: Melbourne players Cameron Pedersen and Christian Petracca are both listed as averaging 1.4 score assists a game but are ranked 28th and 44th respectively. This is because Pedersen's actual average is 1.428 and Petracca's is 1.375).

There's some standout stats in the Lions' struggling season, with Josh Green among the league's best in score assists, but the fact they have three players in the upper echelon for spoils shows how under pressure the defence has been. The Swans’ defence has stood strong so far in 2016 and their midfield is full of stars, but coach John Longmire might be searching for more run from his side in the second half of the season. Youngster Zak Jones is the team’s top-ranked player for running bounces per game, but he’s way down the list at number 72, and star forward Lance Franklin is the Swans’ leader for metres gained, and he’s only just scraped into the top 20.

What would you do with Jeremy McGovern? He is the No.1 intercept mark in the competition but he is also the seventh-best kick inside 50 in the AFL, hitting 67 per cent of targets. The Eagles can't afford to lose him down back but he could be so damaging forward of centre. Lewis Jetta is No.3 in the competition for kicking inside 50 but he's not getting enough of the ball to hold his place in the side let alone hurt the opposition. Part of the Eagles' issues against the best sides can be seen in the score involvements. All roads lead through Josh Kennedy. Opposition sides know if they can cut that supply chain they can strangle the Eagles.

For a side that likes to springboard off half-back, it's no surprise running defenders Matthew Boyd and Shane Biggs gain the most ground for the Dogs. If Jake Stringer isn't kicking goals, the dynamic forward is helping set them up. While many believe Easton Wood is the best intercept mark in the AFL, stats tell us he's fifth best at the skill.

For the team that struggles with efficiency around the goals, Koby Stevens has been missed in recent weeks. The injured midfielder knows how to hit a target, and in round five against the Brisbane Lions he was involved in 13 score involvements - six which resulted in a goal. - Ryan Davidson
