1. Measure up the jacket…
We’re not biased at all, but Caleb Daniel lines up on a half back flank in the All Australian team.
Our number 35 has put together a sensational season in defence.
He’s the number one ranked general defender in the game, according to the AFL Player Ratings, averaging 20.2 disposals – and 16.7 effective disposals – per game.
One of his best performances for the year came on Sunday afternoon, with the dashing defender racking up a season-high 28 disposals and kicking a goal in his home state against Hawthorn.
The 24-year-old’s decision making by foot is elite – generating 546 metres gained – but his defensive work is equally strong, as highlighted by a game-high eight intercepts.
2. In our hands
For the second year running, it’s all in our hands with one game to go.
Win and we’re in. As simple as that.
For the past two weeks, the Bulldogs have done just that, rising to the occasion in a two-point thriller against the West Coast Eagles and following up with a 36-point win against Hawthorn.
The Bulldogs’ midfield has come to the party. Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae, Tom Liberatore, Josh Dunkley and Bailey Smith have all found plenty of the footy over the past fortnight. Tim English has been influential in the middle, too.
But that top eight spot isn’t secured yet. One final hurdle – and a big challenge at that – remains against Fremantle on Sunday in Cairns.
3. Thoughts with Toby
Football can be a brutal game.
Toby McLean was arguably best on ground in last week’s narrow win against the Eagles, playing a pivotal run-with role on Andrew Gaff.
He started Sunday against the Hawks in similarly strong form, kicking the opening goal in the first 30 seconds.
But only moments later, McLean’s leg got caught under a tackle.
Scans today have confirmed an ACL injury for McLean, who will be a big loss for the remainder of 2020 and beyond.
We’re thinking of you Tobes.
