But when it counted, the Bulldogs were simply too strong and too classy at the contest.
The Dogs kicked the first three goals of the final term, in a fightback sparked by Jake Stringer’s move from attack up to a wing.
Stringer kicked the first goal of the quarter, before Caleb Daniel fed a clever handball to Mitch Honeychurch for a second.
Stringer then launched a running bomb from the centre square and suddenly the Bullies were nine points up.

The Dogs came into this needing a win on the road for genuine credibility, not to mention their top-four chances.
The intensity continued into the second term. Port, at times, looked the better team but the Dogs kept responding like good teams do. They underlined their premiership credentials with a character-building win. It was one of the best, most physical and most exciting matches of the season.

The Dogs came from nine points down at three quarter-time to triumph 15.10 (100) to 14.13 (97) at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.
Redpath's teammate Jake Stringer was instrumental in the revival, booting two of his three goals in a gripping final quarter.
The Bulldogs, now with nine wins and three losses this season, were well served by onballers Marcus Bontempelli (30 disposals), Tom Liberatore (24 touches) and Mitch Wallis (27 disposals), while veteran Matthew Boyd (28 possessions) was superb in defence.
