Western Bulldogs speedster Jason Johannisen has kicked off the new year in the main training group after off-season hip surgery.
Johannisen joined team-mates in their first training session for 2019 at VU Whitten Oval on Friday, 10 weeks out from the new season.
The 26-year-old had a minor hip procedure after the 2018 season, built his strength prior to Christmas, and plans to step it up over the coming weeks.

“It was a pretty smooth procedure. I’ve graduated out of the rehab group now,” he said.
“The work from the medical and rehab staff has got me to where I am today.
“I’m just really looking forward to getting a good start in the JLT and playing some good footy.”
2019 was the first taste of official leadership duties for Johannisen, who was retained as part of the Club’s six-man leadership group.
“Last year was a learning curve – just growing as a leader.
“I know where I stand, and my strong points, so I can try to set the standards at training, use my voice and use my experience.”
Johannisen has been particularly impressed by the impact of the Club’s two new experienced recruits, Sam Lloyd and Taylor Duryea.
“Both bring a lot to the table. I’ve been watching a lot of the match play, and (Sam’s) work-rate has been tremendous,” he said.
“Taylor’s leadership in the backline (has been impressive), and his ability to find a mark and use his leg.
“Everyone’s in good nick. There’s a lot of momentum. The energy in the group is really high.”
