Four of Nathan Hrovat’s classmates at Melbourne’s Carey Grammar found their way onto AFL lists in last Thurday’s AFL National Draft, but the 18-year-old is most excited that former school mate Jackson Macrae will also call Whitten Oval home.

Macrae and Hrovat were taken with the Bulldogs second (pick six) and third (pick 21) selections in last week’s national draft, while Carey students Jack Viney (Melbourne), Jason Ashby (Essendon) and Kristian Jaksch (GWS Giants) were also drafted.

“I went to school with Jackson Macrae at Carey Grammar, so it is obviously very good to come to the Club with Jack,” Hrovat said.

On first impressions, the Northern Knights recruit was impressed with his new training base and even more taken by new Senior Coach Brendan McCartney.

“Awesome Club [with] awesome facilities, the Coach has been fantastic, all the staff have been excellent and very welcoming, so it has been good and hopefully continues,” he said.

The nervous energy built on draft day, with the chance of an interstate relocation finally ruled out when the Bulldogs read his name.

“Mum burst into tears straight away and dad was up on his feet so the family was very excited about it, especially staying in Melbourne and especially being at such a prestigious Club like the Bulldogs [who are] going in such a positive direction,” he said.

“Obviously a very exciting time, a very emotional time… just watching at home.

“[It] was a very nervous time - I didn’t know what to expect but am absolutely wrapped to be at the Dogs.”
