Matthew Boyd has gone from strength to strength even by his own high standards. Helping a young playing group transition to a more physically demanding playing style under a new coaching regime, he has been a leader both on and off the field. Season 2012 has seen a number of personal achievements for Boyd, who played his second full season without missing a match and reached his milestone 200 career games.

By the numbers:
It is not just the sheer number of disposals that Boyd accumulates each season but his consistency and ability to build year on year that is the real inspiration. Leading the league in disposals this season, the skipper saw a personal best 46 disposals against Geelong in round 22, which also broke his previous handball record of 31. He also collected a career high 32 kicks against North Melbourne in Round 7. There were only two games this year where Boyd had less than 25 touches, yet amazingly 14 games with 34 possessions or more. A perennial hard worker who gives it his all, he has only missed two games since Round 16 2005 and has played a part in the past 63 consecutive games.
Season Highlight:
No one can knock Boyd’s 46 disposals at 80% disposal efficiency against Geelong in round 22. Complimenting his career best disposals he also had eight clearances, four marks and three tackles. He also finished the game with six rebound 50s.
Pre-Season Focus:
Leading by example as usual, the 30 year old features prominently in pre-season endurance and strength testing and this year won’t be any different. Going blow for blow with good friend Daniel Cross, the young pups need look no further than their captain for motivation this pre-season.
