WESTERN Bulldogs defender Tom Williams is hoping to be playing again within a fortnight if he can avoid surgery on his injured shoulder.

Williams, who was injured in the opening minutes of Sunday's NAB Cup clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium, had scans on Monday and is still awaiting results on the extent of the injury to his previously 'good' shoulder.

A decision will then be made by the Bulldogs medical staff on the course of action.

Williams told Ten News he was hoping to be told the damage would heal by itself in the next two weeks, which could fast-track a return to the playing field.

However, the 25-year-old also said the worst-case scenario, which would involve surgery, would likely sideline him until round eight.

"I was expecting the worst but I've done it that many times now that I know how to go about it," Williams said.

"I just have to put my head down and get back."

The injury-plagued backman has played 73 games in seven seasons with the Bulldogs.
