For the fourth consecutive year, SpiritWest Services (SWS) was an integral partner in the Breaking Down Barriers (BDB) Camp for newly arrived youth in the City of Wyndham. Since the BDB Camp initiative began in 2008, the program has engaged with over 100 newly arrived refugee young people from Burma and Sudan by helping them settle into life in Australia.

The 2011 Camp was attended by 25 young people of refugee backgrounds from Burma and Sudan. Of these 36% of attendees rated the camp an impressive 10/10, and commented what fun they had which is excellent feedback for the Club and other organisers to receive.

BDB Camp Participants

Camp activities included Fire safety education at Geelong CFA, Open Water Learning activities at Eastern Beach (courtesy of Lifesaving Victoria), abseiling, flying fox, traditional Australian bush dancing, indigenous cultural performance and art from One Fire, trust initiatives, as well as the infamous ‘Pinnacle of Terror’.

The camp activities were designed to challenge the young people’s mental and physical strengths. As well as this they are designed with the hope that participants will learn more about themselves and gain invaluable social, leadership and teamwork skills.

The Camp has become a major event in the Clubs Settlement Grants Program each year. It enables the Club to connect with newly arrived young people in their initial settlement phase as well as help identify future youth leaders from new and emerging communities. The Camp also plays a vital role in building relationships with other service providers and partners in the Western region.
The 3-day camp was conducted from 19th - 21st January 2011 at Baanya Biami camp site in Victoria’s Brisbane Ranges.
