From 9am on Saturday almost 60 people from Africa, Asia and Europe will visit the Bulldogs new Elite Learning Centre to be officially recognised as Australian citizens for the first time.

While most new Australian citizens sing the Australian national anthem to celebrate the day, the new Aussies will also sing the Western Bulldogs theme song.

In conjunction with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), the Western Bulldogs will host a citizenship ceremony to welcome new arrivals to the community.

Western Bulldogs President David Smorgon, Chief Executive Campbell Rose, Victorian State Director for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) John Williams, the Hon. Brendan O’Connor MP, Minister for Employment Participation, and Federal Member for Gorton and Acting Mayor for Maribyrnong City Council, Catherine Cumming will attend the event.

Thirty-three adults and 25 youngsters (all under the age of 18) will be granted citizenship under Australia’s humanitarian visa program.
Following the ceremony all eyes will head to the MCG where the Bulldogs will tackle Brisbane supported by more than 2500 cheering children.

More than 1000 children and their carers from Variety, the Royal Children’s Hospital, Create (a foster care program) and the Refugee Minor Program will attend the game thanks to the Carn the Kids “Mega Match” run by LeasePlan and the Western Bulldogs.

The children will be highly visible taking up two bays of seats in the Bulldogs members areas with showbags, face painters, balloon artists and a special visit from a few non-playing Bulldogs players.

In its sixth year the Carn the Kids program has seen more than 11,000 children nationally visit the football for our day out.

On Saturday one lucky child will toss the coin while another will be the Bulldogs mascot and will get the chance to run out with the team alongside captain, Brad Johnson.

The Carn the Kids concept was devised by LeasePlan after Bobby Skilton recommended sending children from the Royal Children’s’ Hospital to an AFL match.

Alongside the Carn the Kids seatings bays will be more than 1500 children attending the game as part of the AFL Multicultural Program. The children from a number of schools in the western suburbs of Melbourne will be bussed to the game by the Bulldogs and are sure to bring plenty of noise and enthusiasm to the game.

LeasePlan Western Bulldogs Chief Executive Campbell Rose says the day’s activities showcase the Club’s continued focus on its community.

“We are proud to be the community club of the AFL and Saturday’s activities will simply highlight that we are not only now creating success on field but that we are focused on supporting and creating success in our own community.”

For those Bulldogs fans who like a little more razzle dazzle, the day will be made complete by the Club’s annual Snowball event to be held at the Crown Palladium.

With “white” carpet arrivals at 7pm and singer Ricki Lee performing for guests during the evening, the night is sure to cap of a special day in the Western Bulldogs calendar.

For more information on any of the above activities please contact the Western Bulldogs on 1300 GO DOGS (46 36 47).
