WESTERN Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade says his club and Jason Akermanis might be forced to re-think the veteran's pre-season plan to retire at the end of 2009.

Akermanis, in the final year of a three-year deal at the Bulldogs, had flagged that this season would be his last at the top level.

But Eade says the 32-year-old has been so good in his seven matches this year that his club wouldn't rule out re-signing the Brownlow medallist should he sustain his early-season form throughout 2009.

"His form the whole year's been very good," Eade told SEN radio on Monday.

"At the start of the year there was no discussion at all about that (a new contract) and Jason made it known it'd be his last season, so there's been no discussion."

Asked whether Akermanis' form – he is averaging 20 disposals and two goals a game– might prompt the club to commence talks about continuing on for another season, Eade said there was no rush.

"If he was 25 years of age then you'd do something, obviously now, but at 32 years of age it could be injury, it's a long season, mentally do you get drained by the end of the year? A lot of older players do struggle with the concept of going through another pre-season

"But his form at the moment's terrific and certainly if he can keep that up and if he's right mentally and if his body's right by the end of the year you'd obviously entertain it."

Many believed that a calf injury during the pre-season was also an indicator that after 14 years at AFL level the game was starting to catch up with the former Brisbane Lion.

But Akermanis has been superb at times this season. On Saturday he booted 4.2 in the Dogs' seven-point win over Melbourne.

The following day, on Triple M, he said he hadn't discounted playing on in 2010.

"I love the group, love playing under Rodney (Eade) and at the end of last year I was getting the feeling that perhaps the club wasn't going to have me round after that, so it was easy for me to say, 'Hey, well let's make it easy, I'll just play the last year of my contract and we'll be done with it'," said.

"But all of a sudden I'm having a really, really good year."

Akermanis will line-up in his 300th career match this Friday night when the Bulldogs take on an unbeaten Geelong.

However the Dogs will be without Robert Murphy, who injured a hamstring against the Demons.

"It's a strain … he was walking pain-free yesterday," Eade said on SEN.

"We'll have a scan today to confirm … but at this stage clinically it looks like he'll just miss a couple [of weeks]."
