THE WESTERN Bulldogs will swap their exercise bikes for the kilometre-covering variety this weekend when they take part in the Western Region Community Bike Ride in Yarraville.

The Dogs will hit the road on Sunday (23 November) for the fourth annual event, which is jointly organised by the club and Victoria University to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

"It's the weekend before we go to Arizona, and it should be really good," Bulldogs midfielder Dylan Addison said.

"Last year we did the middle distance one, and I don't know if we're doing the 40km one yet.

"It's always a good trip, riding the bikes and mingling with the supporters, riding alongside them. It's good fun.

"There's a lot going on, with a sausage sizzle and kick-to-kick at the end. It will be great for all the supporters to come down."

There are three distances and routes for willing participants depending on fitness and experience levels: a 40km ride; a 25 km ride; and a family friendly five km walk/ride.

Afterwards, those involved can take part in a kick-to-kick with the players and activities such as soccer and cricket clinics while taking in some afternoon music.

The aim of the afternoon, according to the club, is to promote healthy living, exercise and environmentally friendly transport in the western suburbs.

Addison said the Bulldogs are looking forward to taking part again, as bike riding isn't part of their usual fitness routine.

"A lot of the injured guys do a bit of road riding, but that's about the only time we get out there. Usually it's just stationary stuff," he said.

"It's good they shut down all the streets for the event – you feel like you own the place. It's great."
