Multicultural students from Sunshine College represented the Red, White and Blue with aplomb at the inaugural AFL Victoria State Secondary Schools Multicultural Cup held last Thursday Fitzroy Park, finishing runners-up in both the male and female divisions.

After a series of round robin matches, both the boys and girls teams made it through to the Grand Final before succumbing to students from the Australian International Academy, an Islamic school representing Carlton.

The Grand Finals were played in windy conditions and despite showing tremendous endeavour and skill throughout the game, the boys and girls both fell short losing by just two and three goals respectively.

The Sunshine College teams consisted of students who are all newly arrived and studying English as a Second Language (ESL).

Sunshine College was invited to represent the Western Bulldogs at the inaugural State Multicultural Cup after competing in the Western Bulldogs ESL Cup played at Whitten Oval last month.

Having learnt the basic football skills through the Bulldogs’ community multicultural programs, the Sunshine College students quickly adapted to their new sport and proved to be more than capable of competing against more experienced students from across the state.
