The Western Bulldogs will receive a third-round selection for midfielder Sam Reid, after the AFL formally notified the Club yesterday of the compensation it will receive for the uncontracted Reid joining the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants.

The compensation selection may be activated by the Bulldogs after its round three selection in any one of the AFL National Drafts between 2011 and 2015.

With the prospect of next year's 'super draft' this additional compensation selection gives the Bulldogs a potential five picks inside the first three rounds of the uncompromised draft and a strong platform to bolster its list with some of the country's best young talent.

Under the List Establishment Rules for the GWS Giants, the AFL's 18th team has the right to select one uncontracted player from each of the AFL clubs - excluding the Gold Coast Suns - with a compensation package to be determined in one of five bands, based primarily on the new contract offer to the player (which reflects his position within all contracted players within the competition) and his age. The Giants were also allowed to take a second player from a single club, if the original club gave its permission for that to occur.

Reid was the first player to be traded by the Club in the recent AFL Trade Week, with the move made possible as it was agreed to by the Bulldogs.
