The first-kick, first-goal club is a prestigious one in the AFL.

There are many footballers who have been celebrated for the achievement of finding the big sticks with their first touch in league football.

But has anyone done it as well as Bulldog youngster, Cody Weightman?

Many have already declared that the 19-year-old, on debut against Essendon at Metricon Stadium on Friday night, executed the best first kick the game has ever seen.

At the 22-minute mark of the first quarter, Weightman flew over team-mate Lachie Young and Bombers defender Michael Hurley, dragging in an impressive grab deep in the pocket.

He looked inside, saw no viable options, and decided to shoot for goal.

An audacious, right foot checkside from 40 metres split the middle, as Weightman dashed infield to be mobbed by team-mates.

His beaming smile told the story of a kid having the time of his life.

“I had an absolute blast out there.  I loved it,” Weightman said.

“It’s a childhood dream, and I’m stoked I could have a run around.

“Making the AFL is one thing, but actually playing was my life goal to this point.  It was an absolute joy.”

If his first goal was extraordinary, his second was pure class.

At the start of the last term, the youngster dished off a handball on the forward flank, rushed forward as the Dogs went inside 50, cleanly latched into a loose ball and dribbled it home under immense pressure.

“It was an encouraging and an impressive first outing for him.  He’s worked hard, and he’s earned it,” said Dogs coach Luke Beveridge.

“Hopefully there’s many more influential games ahead for Cody for the Bulldogs.”

Weightman was selected with pick 15 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, from the Dandenong Stingrays.

He also captained his school team, Haileybury College, where he was coached by Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd.

“It feels like yesterday that myself and Dave Lappage said Cody…I want to let you know you’re going to debut for Haileybury as a year 10,” Lloyd told 3AW radio on Saturday.

“His face was exactly like it was last night.  It feels like yesterday, and now he’s debuting for the Western Bulldogs.  It’s a real thrill.”

Despite the dizzying heights of his first AFL game, Weightman plans to keep his feet planted firmly on the ground.

“I’ve got to reset.  I really just want to be able to hold my spot in the team and play my role,” he said.

“For now, I think that’s my focus.”
