The Whitten Oval played host yesterday to ‘The Great Fresh School Debate,’ the topic being ‘Are you safer with or without a weapon?’

Students from the Western Bulldogs Fresh program took part in the class debate as part of their course.

The FRESH Program is a community education service for young people (15-20) who have experienced difficulties with mainstream education.

It offers them the opportunity to complete senior secondary equivalent qualifications in a flexible and supportive environment.

The aim of the event was to create awareness about a growing problem within the community and it is a topic the students felt strongly about.

By no means was the intention of the debate to condone people carrying weapons, but to open a discussion to understand these behaviours and look to find ways the issue can be addressed.

Western Bulldogs General Manager of Education & Community Engagement Chris Christoforou said that the debate was important for the personal development of the Fresh students.

“The students are obviously debating an issue that is very topical within the community and we hope it will spark a real discussion amongst their peers.  Today also provided the students with a great opportunity to experience the challenges of public speaking and I think they will take a lot out of the debate,” Christoforou said.

Yesterday’s event compliments the existing relationship between the Club and the Department of Justice through it’s ‘Knives Scar Lives Campaign.’
