Williamstown has recorded an impressive 35-point win over Collingwood in their Round 16 clash at Victoria Park yesterday.
In cold and at times wet conditions, the Seagulls were able to kick away in the final term to win 14.15 (99) to 10.4 (64).
The win sees Williamstown move up to second place on the VFL ladder, setting up a mouth-watering clash against ladder leaders Geelong this week at Burbank Oval.
Collingwood burst out of the blocks early, booting the opening three goals of the match with the aid of a slight wind advantage, and held a nine-point lead at quarter-time.
However, the Seagulls were able to answer in the second term, using the wind to kick four goals to one for the term, taking a two-goal lead into the main break.
When the conditions deteriorated in the second half, Williamstown’s smaller brigade came to the fore, with Anthony Anastasio, Willie Wheeler and Stephen McCallum all hitting the scoreboard early on to increase the Seagulls lead.
Collingwood would come at Williamstown again however, booting the last four goals of the quarter to make it just a two-point game at three-quarter time.
The Seagulls were able to respond to the pressure however, answering the Pies challenge by kicking six final term goals to ensure victory.
Up forward, Patrick Veszpremi kicked three of his four goals in the final term, while the ever consistent Mark Austin was again a solid contributor down back.
Williamstown now host Geelong in a top of the table clash at Burbank Oval this Sunday, with the match kicking off at 2pm.
