Season in short:

The rapidly developing former rookie enjoyed a season of consolidation in 2013. While his playing year was cut short by a shoulder injury, Johannisen showed solid improvement in 13 games and flashes of brilliance running off the half-back line. With line-breaking speed, the South African born youngster impressed with his evasiveness and reliable foot skills. He averaged 16 disposals at 78% efficiency and ranked fourth at the Bulldogs for average rebound 50s. In the round five clash with Geelong, Johannisen gathered 24 disposals, four marks and six rebound-50s in a clinical effort running out of defence.

Stat that mattered:

The 21-year-old all but confirmed he belongs in the Bulldogs starting 22 during the year, missing just one game in the senior lineup while fit and available. His 13 senior games were a great improvement on three games in Bulldogs colours last season.

What they said:

“JJ is starting to really mature as a player, and even just his calmness and his composure to make a decision and assess options down the field and then make the right decision is really important.”

- Development Coach Ashley Hansen said after round five

Pre-season focus:

Having spent the final eight games restricted to the sidelines through injury, Johannisen is keen to put in a strong showing over the pre-season to ensure his name is firmly in the mix come round one. The 21-year-old’s pace and efficiency has been a valuable asset to the back six this season —  further development of his defensive work will help him take his game to the next level.
