Recording their sixth win of the season, the Western Bulldogs withstood a last quarter charge from the Casey Demons to prevail on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields.
Keeping the home side goalless from the last minutes of the opening quarter through until the three minute mark of the last, the Bulldogs looked to have the game in their keeping.
Back-to-back goals from Casey’s Kate Hore and Nicole Gardner closed the margin to nine points with four minutes left to play, putting the result under threat. However, the Bulldogs’ held firm to take the win at the final siren 4.6 (30) to 3.2 (20).
Sarah Jolly kicked two goals for the victors and was the only multiple goal kicker on the field.
Scores were tied at quarter time, before a two goal to none second quarter saw the visitors open up a 13 point advantage at the main break.
It was quintessential wet-weather football, with shots on goal hard to come by. The Bulldogs capitalized on their chances, adding a further one goal in the third term, to lead by 20-points at the final change.
After toppling former Bulldogs captain Katie Brennan’s Richmond side last weekend at home, the Bulldogs were again confronted with another familiar opponent. AFLW premiership defender Libby Birch lined-up for Casey against her old side for the first time in Saturday afternoon’s match.
The Bulldogs (6-3) momentarily leap into the top four on the Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s Ladder after Saturday afternoon’s win, however their longevity in that position rests on the result of Sunday’s match-up between the 13th placed Darebin Falcons and fifth-placed NT Thunder.
An away win to the Thunder at Preston City Oval will see the Bulldogs relegated back to fifth place. The top six at season’s end will contest an expanded six-team finals series.
The Bulldogs will head to RSEA Park next Sunday afternoon (3:10pm, 21 July) to take-on the second placed Southern Saints.
