Senior Coach Brendan McCartney likes to keep things uncomplicated, and his message to his players has been no different — learn how to master your position.
“A lot gets talked about structures, tactics and match winning moves from the coaches’ boxes, but in the end it is ultimately having more people than the opposition who are really good in their positions,” McCartney said.
“We feel that a high number of our young and just slowly maturing players are starting to deal with the physical and mental demands of their position, which is making us a lot more functional.
“It has been pleasing to see their growth in their positions.”
Part of the evolution has seen the young Bulldogs squad improve their efficiency and decision making, which in turn has helped the Club implement their game plan more consistently.
“We are probably kicking the ball to smarter spots, not burning the ball as much and just being more creative but less risky,” he said.
“We have been a bit more predictable but still managing to get the ball to dangerous parts of the forward line and not turn it over.”
McCartney said the use of Liam Picken alongside veteran Robert Murphy in more offensive roles out of defence has also aided the Bulldogs transitioning from defence.
“Robert Murphy and Liam Picken have been terrific they’re not only dealing with good players but they are creating opportunities for us as well,” he said.
“That is probably a bit more confidence from our defenders to run and get more involved in the game.”
