President Peter Gordon has poured cold water on any future debate about reverting the Western Bulldogs name to Footscray.
Speaking at Wednesday’s Sutton Medal, Gordon insisted the team names are representative of the history and future of the football Club, and the Club’s place in the game at state and national level.
“I read often the debate on what we should be called, and I think we should lose this idea that there needs to be any conflict about this.”
“We embrace that we are the Western Bulldogs playing in the most elite national competition and that’s the way we’re going to stay.”
“And in the VFL, we honour our historic roots, as the Footscray Football Team.“
“And there it is, there’s no conflict between the two, that’s who we are.”
The Footscray Football Club was renamed the Western Bulldogs in October, 1996.
The name returned in 2014 as the Club entered a standalone side in the Victorian Football League after ending the alliance with the Williamstown Football Club in the state league.
