It’s a case of taking it one day at a time for the Western Bulldogs’ newest recruits, as they settle into their new home at Victoria University Whitten Oval and take their first steps as senior footballers.
After having their names called out at last Thursday night’s NAB AFL Draft, Toby McLean, Lukas Webb, Declan Hamilton, Bailey Dale and Caleb Hamilton arrived at the club on Sunday, having spent the time since quickly acclimatising to their new environment.
Father-son selection Zaine Cordy has had an extra fortnight at the Kennel to his fellow draftees, commencing training at the Club in mid-November.
“The first few days have been pretty surreal,” said Lukas Webb, who was the Bulldogs' second pick at 27 overall.
“Just seeing all the boys that you see on TV all the time, it doesn’t feel real,” Webb said.
South Australian recruits Hamilton and Daniel flew to Melbourne on Sunday, and joined their new teammates on Monday for their first training session.
All six recruits were put through their paces with physical testing and a light skills session on the track.
“We had our first run out here today,” Daniel told BulldogsTV.
“I’m looking forward to getting started, and to start pushing ourselves a little bit more.”
With the full playing list now complete after Wednesday's rookie draft, the Bulldogs top pick Toby McLean says it’s been an inviting environment to walk in to.
“It’s been a bit overwhelming but all the boys, they’re quite a young group, they’ve made us feel really welcome.”
When asked about their goals for the summer, McLean was diplomatic.
“Just take it week by week, and just find myself improving as the weeks go by.”
