The Western Bulldogs are looking to train “smarter”, Daniel Giansiracusa says, as the Club looks to maximise their pre-season and surpass the improvement of other teams.

A late season surge in 2013 gave the veteran confidence in the Bulldogs’ direction but he knows more improvement is needed to better the Club’s standing in 2014.

“You look through every club and every list and you think that everyone is going to improve, so you have to be ahead of the game,” Giansiracusa said.

“Hopefully with the training we are doing and the steps we took late in the year, we can build on that and take that momentum into the season.”

Post-Christmas the training has been centred around more match simulation drills, as the Club’s new additions familiarise themselves with the game plan and the emerging talent tussle for spots in the starting lineup.

“It gets more into game like scenarios at training now and the running drops down a bit but you are just trying to top up as much as you can as you go through,” he said.

“Obviously there were a few personnel changes through the trade period, we got a few young guys into the group and then the maturity of the group – everyone is a year older.

“We expect the young guys to step up again and we are just looking for improvement.”

Giansiracusa refused to predict what the 2014 season might bring but said if his teammates continue to play for the team then the rest will take care of itself.

“We haven’t set any expectations in terms of wins and stuff like that but we are driving each other, the coaches are driving us to get better and hopefully that results in wins,” he said.
