A proposed straight-swap, Ryan Griffen for Tom Boyd, is the talk of the trade table on Monday, Western Bulldogs President Peter Gordon has told westernbulldogs.com.au.
After last night’s revelation that club captain, All-Australian and two time Bulldogs best and fairest Ryan Griffen would seek a trade to the Giants, it was announced early on Monday that Giants key-forward Boyd wants to continue his football career at the Dogs.
“To have a kid of the character, and the ability and promise of Tom Boyd saying that he wants to make the Whitten Oval his long-term home is a great thrill for us,” Peter Gordon said.
“We’re very keen to sit down with GWS to work out an appropriate deal
“What we think is fair and equitable is a straight trade.”
While Griffen is undoubtedly one of the competition’s elite midfielders, 200-centimetre Boyd played less than half his debut season in the senior ranks, kicking eight goals.
“Tom is a guy who obviously has his career in front of him, he played nine games in his first season and Griff of course is an established and accomplished superstar of the competition.”
“[Griffen] is an All-Australian, he’s captain, has just played his 200th game, his best years are or course right now and immediately ahead of him.”
“Value for value we think that’s fair.”
Gordon said the prospective addition of Boyd would complement the emerging group of talented youngsters at the Kennel.
“We think we’ve got nine, 10 or 11 real quality elite young players under the age of 23.”
“Tom’s a real priority for us now, we hope that wiser heads will prevail at both ends of the transaction.”
“Managed sensibly, with mature heads, this could be a win for both clubs.”
