A minimum three-week mini pre-season could be completed by AFL clubs before the potential resumption of the 2020 season, according to League headquarters.
A number of scenarios are being pondered by the AFL regarding the structure of the 2020 competition, if and when the season can recommence this year.
The key factor for the AFL in determining the way forward is to take advice from Government and medical authorities about the coronavirus threat.
"One of the things put forward was a pre-season of three weeks, and no practice matches, to get going again," AFL General Manager of Football Operations Steve Hocking told AFL.com.au.
"We are very appreciative of the flexibility and agility shown and demonstrated by the clubs.
"What was put forward was three to four weeks. If there was a postponement that went to later in the year, then the four weeks would kick in, but it is not going to be any later than that.
"The lack of practice matches – people might call that out, but they will be able to do match sim and so forth amongst their squads.
"But everyone gets to the start line, all the same."
On March 22, the AFL announced it had suspended the 2020 season until at least May 31.
The AFL is determined for the remaining 144 matches to be played, even if that means extending the season through to the end of December.
