An in depth look at the world of international sport was offered to 40 Whitten Project Young Leaders recently, when Football Operations Manager Ben Graham addressed the group about his experience in the AFL and NFL.

Boasting over 200 games of AFL experience with Geelong, 99 NFL games at four clubs - including the NFC Championship and Super Bowl runners up with Arizona Cardinals in 2008 - Graham has a wealth of experience to draw on.

Graham is also only the second ever athlete to play AFL and NFL football and the only person to ever captain a team in two different professional sports (Geelong and New York Jets).

The athlete turned sports administrator spoke candidly with the Young Leaders about his fascinating career pathway, taking a range of questions from the group.

Topics included assimilating into American culture, his role as an NFL punter, the Super Bowl, training commitments in both codes and the difficulties associated with relocating overseas.

Maribyrnong City Council Young Leader Georgia Johnston described the session as “inspirational”.

“Ben showed me that no matter how many times you get told no or sorry it’s over, to keep trying and keep your head up,” Johnston said.

Graham’s diverse leadership experiences were invaluable for the Young Leaders and his take home message was simple - believe in yourself and you will go far.
