The Western Bulldogs affiliated MUJU Peace Club won Sunday’s Unity Cup - after remaining undefeated throughout the competition.

MUJU Peace Club battled hard in overcast conditions proving to be too strong for the eleven other teams, eventually taking away the silverware in a 6.2.38 to 2.1.13 victory.

The 5th Annual Unity Cup consisted of 12 teams made up of Jewish, Muslim, South East Asian, Indigenous and African young men aged 16 - 18 from across Australia.

Organised by the Australian Federal Police and supported by the AFL Multicultural Program, the Bulldogs co-hosted the event alongside Essendon, North Melbourne and Hawthorn Football Clubs.

The Unity Cup embraces Australia’s cultural diversity and aims to bring communities together through their mutual love of AFL.

The Bulldogs fielded three affiliated teams with Newport Islamic Society, UHS / VU Flemington and MUJU Peace Club applying themselves well throughout the tournament displaying an impressive skill level, commitment to their teammates and an entertaining brand of football.

The round robin AFL 9’s format involved two pools of 6 teams playing off against each other with the strongest two teams advancing to the Unity Cup Grand Final at JJ Holland Park in Kensington.

MUJU Peace Club and Southern Dragons both emerged from the round robin tournament undefeated before MUJU dominated in a one sided affair to take away the Premiership.

The MUJU Peace Club formed after being inspired by the Palestinian / Israeli Peace Team’s visit to Whitten Oval in 2011.

Bialik College and Newport Islamic Society merged adopting the name MUJU by uniting their two cultures Muslim and Jewish (MU-JU).

Western Bulldogs would like to congratulate MUJU on Sunday’s exciting victory and thank Newport Islamic Society and UHS / VU Flemington for their support of the 2012 Unity Cup.
