Name: Phoebe McWilliams
Age: 29
Height: 178cm
Occupation: Communications Co-ordinator, Melbourne Cricket Club
Local club: St Kilda Sharks
Position: Centre half forward
First starting playing football: I started playing football at Vickick (which was Auskick for us oldies) when I was about six. I play for my primary school and secondary school in their football teams and then I joined the St Kilda Sharks when I was 21.
How you got involved in football: My dad. He loves his footy, both playing and supporting his team. He taught me most of what I know.
Achievements: Melbourne Football Club (2014), Victorian representative (2007, 2009, 2011), All-Australian (2009),
AFL team supported: Melbourne
Biggest influence on your football: My dad. He and mum still come and watch a lot of my games. He comes out after the quarter time and three quarter time huddles and gives me tips on how to improve my game. He’s always honest with me and will tell me if I’m not playing well. He’s never negative though, always helpful – he still plays footy himself!
If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be: This is a tricky one. I tried to think of people who I should pick, like movie stars or sportspeople but to be honest I would love nothing more than having dinner with three of my friends. That would be most enjoyable for me.
Best advice you’ve ever received: I was really stressing out before a game recently and a team mate of mine came up to me and told me to just go out on the field and enjoy myself. It sounds simple, but that’s why we play footy because we love it. At the top level, everyone knows how to play, it’s just about managing your emotions on the day. Just have fun and the rest will follow.
