Much has been publicised of Tom Boyd’s arrival at the Western Bulldogs and the weight of expectation on the young forward's shoulders, but Boyd says he’s been most concerned with internal expectations.

Speaking with AFL.com.au’s ‘First Bounce’ on Thursday morning, Boyd says he’s focusing on his role within the team and his teammates’ expectations.

“External expectations aren’t really anything that I can really pay attention to or worry about but the expectations within the group is for me to deliver on my part of the bargain, which is making a contest and providing that target around the ground like all key forwards.”

Boyd understands that his spot will need to be earned, and has spent the pre-season on a strict diet and physical plan to better prepare himself for the rigours of senior football.

“Without that base that is required… I won’t be getting a game like everyone else.

“So I’ll be trying to put my best foot forward and providing a contest and giving that real energy and competitiveness around the ground that we need from our big guys.”

Senior coach Luke Beveridge has confirmed several times that Boyd would spend some of the season in a ruck role, to help further his game and build on his existing attributes.

“I suppose the need for versatility is growing more and more in the game with the capped rotations and the sub being brought in.

“Obviously there’s a need for someone to be able to pinch hit in the ruck, playing 100 per cent game time is not viable for most ruckman… I’ll be trying to fill in a role in our team that needs to be filled and if I have to play ruck and pinch hit in there it’s a great way for me to get involved in the game.

“I’m really looking forward to it… I know in the NAB Cup I really thrived being able to get around the ball and around the contest.”
