For some, the day was an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the mark they’d left for future generations, for others, it was an opportunity to sit back, reflect and remember some of the great players and moments of the Club’s history.
Former Maidstone residents, sisters, Lynette Monaghan and Jeanette Hill travelled from Castle Hill and Tasmania respectively to view the seat they purchased in honour of their parents Matthew and Dolly Haggart.
While both remember coming to watch the games every week, Jeanette’s fondest memory was standing up to her knees in mud watching Ted Whitten carried off after his last game against Hawthorn in 1970.
Another former resident of the west now residing in Sydney, Lynette Knight was given her seat in the stand as a gift from her husband Grant (a non AFL follower) to pay tribute to her devotion to the Club.
For Trevor Simpson of Wonthaggi, the day trip to Melbourne for him turned out to be a very special surprise. Trevor’s family purchased the seat on his behalf and brought him along to the event to unveil his seat. Trevor’s family has a long connection to the Bulldogs, with his grandparents living in Gordon Street, Footscray. One of ten children, Trevor described it as “the best surprise of his life.”
And judging by the smiles on their faces, each and every person looked proud to own a piece of footy heritage in the iconic EJ Whitten Stand and help wipe some of the Club’s debt to give the team the best chance to achieve the ultimate success.
