Adam Cooney wants to be a Bulldog for life, and after signing a new two-year deal with the Western Bulldogs the 2008 Brownlow Medallist is a step closer to playing out his career as a one Club player.

Cooney revealed he agreed to terms with the Bulldogs in the past 24 hours, after a meeting with key football club staff, including Chief Executive Simon Garlick, Senior Coach Brendan McCartney, General Manager Football Graham Lowe and List Manager Jason McCartney.

Cooney said at no stage had he considered a move away from the Kennel.bn

“I’ve said all along that I wanted to stay at the [Western Bulldogs] footy club, it’s the place that gave me my start, I’ve been here for ten years, and I’m wrapped to sign-on for another two and hopefully be a Bulldogs for life.”

“I love the Club, I think the Club is improving, especially the last six or seven weeks we’ve shown that in a couple of years we’re going to be a really good side.”

The 27 year-old said senior coach Brendan McCartney had been a key figure in his decision to re-sign with the Bulldogs.

“[McCartney] has been great for me personally, especially over the last eight weeks. He’s been ringing me, we’ve been chatting about getting negotiations forward and going.”

“[McCartney] was really keen for me to stay, which made me feel really positive as well.”

Playing 18 of the Bulldogs' 20 games to date this season, Cooney has averaged 25.3 possessions a game, compared to 25.5 in his Brownlow Medal winning year of 2008.

The 200 gamer has amassed 30 or more disposals in seven games this season. With two rounds remaining he could yet surpass his career best of eight 30 disposal games he set in 2009.

Attributing his impressive year to completing a full pre-season for the first time in years, Cooney is happy with how his body has handled the demands of the season to date.

“I think the last probably 12 months I’ve just been able to get to a position where I could train, I did a lot of the preseason, which I got fit enough to play out games which I haven’t been able to do for three or four years.”

“I’ve been consistently training, and the body is feeling really good.”
