Football fans will be given greater access to women’s football in 2015, with both AFL women’s matches to be broadcast live in 2015.
The AFL website will live stream the Melbourne v Western Bulldogs women’s match from the MCG on Sunday 24 May.
While the return match on Sunday 16 August at Etihad Stadium will be broadcast national by the Seven Network.
Both broadcasts are a major coup for the women’s game which continues to grow momentum, with 195,000 female participants currently playing AFL football in some capacity, up from approximately 60,000 five years ago.
Western Bulldogs player Katie Brennan said the broadcast announcement would be pivotal to the future of the game.
“It’s so important not only for women’s footy but for women’s sport in general.
“We’re just going to hopefully keep driving the sport forward… and hopefully from being televised, it will show a whole lot more people out there what women’s footy is all about and how talented and professional the girls are.”
The match on Sunday 24 May will commence at 12:20pm, and will be a curtain raiser to the men’s Melbourne v Western Bulldogs AFL match at 3:20pm.
Tickets to the match are $15 for adults and children under 15 are free. Tickets are available via ticketek.com.au
