STAR Western Bulldogs trio Tom Liberatore, Jackson Macrae and Easton Wood all trained on Monday and put their names up for selection this week, according to defender Dale Morris.

The Dogs had a closed training session, but Morris said all three had done most of the session ahead of Thursday night's elimination final against West Coast at Domain Stadium.

Liberatore hasn't played since round 19 after suffering an ankle syndesmosis injury, Macrae hurt his hamstring tendon in the same game against Geelong and stand-in skipper Wood missed the final match of the season after injuring his ankle against Essendon in round 22.

"Those boys were out there training. They've put their names up for selection and the coaches will make the decision," Morris said.

"Everyone looked really strong out there, which was nice."

When Wood has missed this season, the Dogs have rotated the captaincy among Morris, Marcus Bontempelli and Matthew Boyd.

Boyd, 34, and Morris, 33, are seasoned veterans but Bontempelli is in just his third season.

The 20-year-old was excellent as skipper against West Coast at Etihad Stadium earlier this season, with 30 disposals and nine tackles.

If Wood does not play this week and the Dogs stick to their rotation policy, Bontempelli won't hold the mantle as he was captain in the final-round loss to Fremantle.

However, the first-time All Australian is prepared to be skipper if he is chosen for the role.

"I take that as it comes. I don't earmark it as something I look to each week," Bontempelli said.

"It's a great honour to skipper a club and I've been fortunate enough to do it twice this year, and if that's the way we go, then that's the way we go."

Another Dog to enter the selection mix is All Australian Jake Stringer after spending the past two matches in the VFL.

He didn't line up in Footscray's qualifying final loss on Saturday, with just a five-day break between that game and the senior team's clash with West Coast.

"We saw a good response from Jakey. We knew we were going to get that and it's important that he did that," Bontempelli said.

Bontempelli said the team had drawn on inspiration from the elimination final loss to Adelaide last season throughout the year.

That night saw the Dogs fall short by seven points in a thrilling contest.

"You do reflect on the game quite a bit. We probably have done so for the whole year," Bontempelli said.

"We've developed our game in a number of different areas (after) we came away from that game."
