The Western Bulldogs’ Sons of the West men’s health program kicked off last week with record numbers of men signing up to take part in the ground breaking program.
Sons of the West began in 2014 in response to the dire health statistics of men living and working across Melbourne’s west, with a specific focus on the municipalities off Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham and Melton.
This year the program has expanded to include the City of Ballarat, and has increased from five sites to 12 across the six participating councils.
The program has again been met with great enthusiasm with 600 men signing up to take part in the first week, a 92% increase on last year’s opening week number of 312.
The program will be running for the next 10 weeks covering:
- Nutrition and healthy dietary advice (including a free cooking class);
- Mental Health – Resilience;
- Promoting physical exercise and limiting sedentary behaviour;
- Arthritis and Osteoporosis;
- Raising awareness on domestic violence within the community;
- Cancer risk and prevention;
- Challenging Masculinity – Promoting gender equality.
