Essendon will go into Sunday's clash with the Dogs unchanged, opting to stick with the 22 that defeated North Melbourne 27 points last Saturday.

In defence the Dons are led by Michael Hurley whose form has been a standout in the back six with his ability to lockdown opposing key forwards. In 2017 Hurley has also increased his offensive impact by providing another rebounding option out of defence.

Small defenders James Kelly and Andrew McGrath have both been important cogs in the Dons ball movement out of defence. In particular McGrath whose pace and composure has complimented the defensive unit well.     

The midfield features Zach Merrett whose form over the past 18 months has seen him emerge as a premier midfielder of the competition.  Merrett’s ball use is precise and if afforded time and space is a real threat. Skipper Dyson Heppell has ably supported Merrett and shown a willingness to also push forward where possible.

Veterans Jobe Watson and Brendon Goddard provide further leadership and presence within the midfield group. Watson is a key to controlling the inside battle with his ability to win clearances and setup outside runners vitally important.

David Zaharakis and Travis Colyer may split their time between the midfield and half forward with the pair both able to hit the scoreboard making them players to watch.

In the forward line Joe Daniher has been in strong form with his contested marking and long left foot kick a feature. Daniher has formed a dangerous duo with swingman Cale Hooker both of whom pose an aerial threat to opposition defences.

The Dons forward half pressure is a key to generating scores with small forwards Orazio Fantasia and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti both seen as barometers for the side. In particular Fantasia whose combination of pace and overhead marking makes him a difficult match up.
