Callum Porter says he’s settled in and enjoying the challenge of his first AFL pre-season after the Gippsland Power product landed at the kennel with the 74th pick of the 2017 NAB AFL National Draft last November.
Speaking to westernbulldogs.com.au from Mooloolaba where the Dogs are on 10-day training camp, the 18-year-old says it’s a dream come true to be on an AFL list.
“I couldn’t be happier to be here,” Porter told westernbulldogs.com.au this week.
“It’s been a dream for a long time and I suppose I’m very lucky and privileged to do it.
“The first couple of months have been great.”
The Bulldogs headed north on Wednesday to Queensland for a camp – with added heat and humidity.
“It was probably one of the toughest sessions we’ve done. The match sim at the end really tested us,” he said.
“There were lots of late game play situations and plenty of hard work but we’ve loved it.
“It’s just another challenge, I suppose, especially with the climate up here.”
Along with the skills, weights and beach sessions, Porter said the camp also provides an opportunity for the playing group to bond.
“It really makes us a strong unit and allows us to build on certain things which we might not necessarily be able to do at home.
“In terms of off the track – it’s good to spend time with everyone outside of the football club environment.
“We can all get closer and because we’re all together for the 9-10 days straight, it’ll give us a great amount of time to get to know each others’ personalities and work hard out on the track as well.”
Porter said the playing group was in a good spirits and well prepared ahead of their 2018 season campaign.
“We’re in a really good place and building strongly in terms of the relationships.
“We’re gelling pretty well and us young guys coming in, from our point of view, we feel like we really belong.”
