Last weekend in the battle for the EJ Whitten Cup, the Western Bulldogs met Essendon at the Docklands.

Essendon were off to a fast start, however the Bulldogs responded when Robert Murphy was able to get around the Bomber's defence and land the Bulldogs first goal. Shortly after, the second goal for the Bulldogs came from last year's Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney, after he was awarded a free for a push in the back. It seemed undisciplined acts were costing the Bombers early in the first term.

A surge in the final term secured the win for the Bulldogs after they trailed for most of the first half.

Mitch Hahn starred for the Bulldogs finishing with five goals, three of which came in the final term.

This week the team are preparing for Rivalry Round, where they meet undefeated League leaders St Kilda, on Saturday night at the Docklands.

Mitch Hahn said earlier in the week that the team are looking forward to this weekend's clash and that "there's a lot of excitement because you get to judge where you are. It's an opportunity to go out there and see where we're at six weeks from finals. We've still got a lot of improvement and we'll find out how much we've improved since the last time we played them."

In their Round six clash earlier this Season, the Saints beat the Dogs by a final margin of 28 points, this week we hope the Bulldogs can put the Saints winning streak to bed.

This weekend the 'Barker Whitten Challenge' takes place and the winning team will take the Plate home. Awarded only once a year, the Barker Whitten Shield celebrates the achievements of Bulldogs great Ted Whitten and St Kilda Legend Trevor Barker. Both men died of Cancer and have charities named in their honour. We hope to see the Shield in the Western Bulldogs hands after the final siren on Saturday night.
