The Western Bulldogs are keeping an open mind when it comes to their forward structure in 2018, according to assistant coach Ashley Hansen.

With the arrival of 199cm former Lion Josh Schache in the off-season, the Dogs have a plethora of options to turn to in front of goal this season, where Jack Redpath and Tom Boyd could provide multiple tall targets.

Hanson, speaking to AFL.com.au, said while the Dogs will keep their options open week to week, having a group of powerful 194cm-plus forwards available for selection is a welcome problem to have.

"There's no reason why they all can't play in the same forward line," Hansen said.

"It's a great headache to have if they're all marking the ball. If they're all converting on goal and providing defensive pressure, they'll all play.

"Being opened minded is really important in our game because it depends on the opposition and who you've got available for selection.

"I think (our height) is a strength of ours going into the season."

The Bulldogs open their JLT Community Series campaign on Saturday, March 3 against Hawthorn at Mars Stadium in Ballarat, before travelling to Moe on March 10 to take on Collingwood.

In contrast to previous years, Hansen said the Dogs could put their best team on the park for both games.

"I'd like to think with one less game (this year), we'd pick our best side (for both games)," Hansen said.

"But then again, we have to meet as a match committee and might decide to invest and have a look at our youth in one of those games.

"I think two games is a good preparation."
